Why I am switching to PS4/PS5 for my physical games

For years my console of choice has been the Xbox, i have owned all the Playstations and their exclusives but the Xbox always got the edge for me for multi platform games. The first Xbox was more powerful and looked better than PS2, the 360 was the better social choice with my friends and the games were developed for 360 as their primary platform And that stuck through the XBO generation, achievements and peers being the main driver, and once the Xbox One X came out making it the best looking platform that cemented things.

So it was logical to pick up an Xbox Series X. Mine arrives this week. Although now I have purchased one it got me thinking. I looked up Halo Infinite and the single player game isn’t on the disc version. Same with Forza, so literally no point owning the disc. The Forza disc literally had 21GB of data which is a little menu screen if you launch it that directs you to a download section. I’m fact, MS quietly abandoned physical releases and sort of snuck it past everyone. Any disc game you buy is actually the Xbox One version, and when you put it in a Series X it just downloads additional XSX content. There are a few games released physically for XSX (Medium, Judgenent) but that’s it. Even with XBO games on the XSX if you aren’t connected to the internet the first time they will install but won’t work. Something that should worry people who play consoles long after their lifecycle. I still play the Mega Drive to this day.

It leaves me in a position where I will purchase future multi platform games for the PS4/PS5 whenever it releases. Sony is putting their physical games on dual layer BluRays which carry 100GB of data. It honestly makes me question if this is finally the generation to simply accept the digital future and draw a line under collecting now. If you can’t own in a playable format then is there any point. Yes I have made a lot of money but I actually do love the games. I probably play the Mega Drive and GameCube more than anything else at the moment.
